If you spend most of your day sitting at a desk, you’ve probably experienced lower back stiffness, tight hips or discomfort when standing up after being seated for a while. Some people also notice that they feel less flexible or find it harder to move freely throughout the day.
This happens because our bodies are designed to move. When we sit for long periods, the muscles at the front of the hips become tight, while the muscles that support the hips and lower back become less active. Remaining in the same position for hours can also reduce joint movement and increase feelings of stiffness.
The good news is that small amounts of movement throughout the day can make a big difference.
1. Hip Flexor Stretch

2. Piriformis Stretch in Sitting

3. Bridge with Pelvic Tilt

Take Regular Movement Breaks
Regular movement breaks help reduce stiffness and keep your hips and lower back moving as well.
- Aim to stand up and move for 2 minutes every 30 minutes
- Walk to refill your water bottle
- Take a short walk around the office
- Perform gentle stretches
Remember, you don’t need to spend hours exercising to feel better. Consistent movement throughout the day is often one of the simplest and most effective ways to keep your lower back and hips feeling comfortable.
