Healthy Aging Fun Fact!

Your spine is actually stronger than you think.

The discs between the bones of your spine act like shock absorbers.

Think of them like the suspension system in a car. When you go over bumps, your car doesn’t take the full impact because the suspension absorbs and spreads the force.

Your spinal discs do the same thing. They cushion your spine, reduce impact, and help you move smoothly without excessive strain.

These discs are made of a special tissue that is about 80 percent water, which allows them to compress and rebound with movement.

Here’s the interesting part.

These discs do not have their own blood supply.

Instead, they rely on movement to stay healthy.

Every time you bend, twist, stretch, or walk, you are helping your discs draw in nutrients and stay hydrated. It’s like a sponge being gently squeezed and released. Movement is what allows it to absorb what it needs.

That means something as simple as daily movement and good spinal mobility plays a huge role in supporting a healthy spine as we age.

So the next time you go for a walk or do your stretches, remember you are not just exercising you are literally feeding your spine.
